Registered Midwives are specialists in the care of healthy women experiencing an uncomplicated pregnancy. We are available to clients 24 hours a day, seven days a week by pager. To find out more about midwives and midwifery in British Columbia please check our Frequently Asked Questions.
If you are under the care of a midwife you will not see a physician unless there are concerns or complications. Most births are normal and there are no complications. If there are complications, we can consult or transfer care to a physician. Midwives provide safe and expert care to healthy clients and newborns.
BC midwives provide care under a model and philosophy which includes the belief that people have the right to make informed choices. At Community Midwives Kelowna we are committed to working with women and families to promote informed decision making. Informed decision making is an interactive process involving the promotion of shared responsibility between both midwife and client, recognizing the client as the primary decision-maker.
Midwives at our practice attend births at home, at the Malachite Birth Suite, and at Kelowna General Hospital. Your midwife will assess your health needs and provide information to ensure you can make a safe and informed decision about where to have your baby.
